THE ROMANTIC PERIOD (19th century )

The music of the Romantic Period belonged to the 19th century. The term romantic mean "Freedom of self expression" in contrast to the classical period where composes were bound to the idea form The ( Romantic ) word is applied in music to the works of  this time composers.

                                   H.Berlioz ( 1803-1869 )


                           He was born in France. Full name is Hector Berlioz. The greatest musical figure in the french romantic movement. His composition tendered towards being grandros(very grand) employing large resources like a large orchestra.He was a briliant writer for the orchestra. He's not a good  instruments player. 










                                      J.Brahms (1833-1897 ) 


                   He was born in Hamburg, Germany. Full name is Johannes Brahms. German composer and pianist strongly classical in his out look (ideas) and he developed the form of the Beethoven period. He is considered as a classical romantic.                  











                                  F.Chopin ( 1810-1849)

                    Full name is Frederic Chopin. Born in Poland. He composed music only for the piano, and is often called the poet of the piano. Chopin was a great inventor of melody(means beautiful music).
              Music he composed was very pianistic, with a lot of or namentatious  and chromaticism. There is a typical fluency prevalent. He used a lot tonal gradation. He introduced the Rubato style(robbed time). Chopin excelled in the smaller form. His Polish qualities come out strongly in his Mazurka Polonaises.  






                                   F.B.Mendelssohn ( 1809-1847 )

                    Full name is Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. He was born in Hamburg, Germany. He's a grand son of the German-Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn was one of the great composers of the Romantic period. Also accomplished pianist, organist and conductor.  At the age of seventeen, he composed the overture to a mid summer nights dream, in which is the traditional wedding march. He received the music of Bach. 









                                   F.Liszt ( 1811-1886 )

                    He was a Hungarian composer. Full name is Franz Liszt. pianist and composer. He was one of the greatest pianist in the     19th century. He was the worlds greatest transcriber or arranger. His music is orchestral in style(piano). It is complicated and technically difficult. He is famous for his 20 Hungarian Rapso dies. Liebestracem(a dream of love). This was the little given by Liszts to his piano arrangements two third of his work. Liebestracem no 3 is the well known one(piano). 







                                   R.Schumann ( 1810-1856 )

                   German composer. Full name is Robert Schumann. His music reflects to the romantic feeling of the German literature of the period. He composed four symphonies and other orchestral works, much chamber music and much piano music with fanciful titles. Many songs and  chord works. He published a music magazine.                









                                   P.L.Tchaikowsky ( 1840-1893 )

                   He was a Russian composer. Full name is Pyotr Llyich Tchaikovsky. He was the first Russian composer to capture the British and American audiences. He is most popular of all Russian composers. He studying the music of western Europe, but his music also sounds Russian. He had melodic rein. Brilliant orchestral clock and strong emotional expression.









                                   R.Wagner (1818-1883 ) 

                      German operatic composer. Full name is Richard Wagner. In this works the German Romantic movement of the nineteenth century, found it's complete expression. He created a new art " Music drama " . He gave a importance to the literlary music and scenic art.              










                                     G.Verdi ( 1813-1901 ) 

                      He was an Italian composerFull name is Giuseppe Verdi. Strictly an operatic composer. Verdi is the greatest composer of opera in nineteenth century.












                                    C.M.von Weber ( 1786-1826 )

                  He was born in Eutin, Germany. Full name is Carl Maria von Weber. He was most important German composer of the early Romantic period. He died 1826 in London.   











                                   Debussy ( 1862-1918 )

                      He was a French composer. Full name is Claude Debussy. He's a impressionist composer. He was much influenced by the French impressionist pointers and poets. He used a pentatonic scale. He made his music very different from the Romantic style that other composers were using at the time. Debussy is one of the most important composers of the early twentieth  century (The late Romantic period).
